WHY IS PHYSICAL EDUCATION IMPORTANT?
Many of us have memories of playing fun games in PE and growing up participating in sports when we were young. As we get older, there are many things that take our time such as work, family, and friends. Although these things are important to our lives, the need for daily exercise is just as important for us as adults as it is for kids! Physical education teaches students many skills that they can use for their entire lives to stay physically active for a lifetime. A few of the skills learned in PE include:
-Teamwork
-Hard work
-Goal setting
-Self confidence
-Respect for others
-Sportsmanship
-Improvement in academic performance
Countless studies have shown how an increase in physical activity and education in schools shows an increase in academic performance. (See WCPSS study below!) Aside from performing better academically, students can strengthen their bones and muscles, relieve stress, lose weight, improve heart health and positively influence their mood with increased exercise in their lives. Please take a moment to view the images below to see more on why PE and lifelong exercise is important for ALL! You can also click the "HEALTHFUL LIVING RESOURCES" page to explore many websites packed with information about how to be healthy, fun computer games, and even GoNoodle videos to enjoy exercising as a family at home!
---------->WCPSS EOG & PACER TEST STUDY<----------
The images below show data from WCPSS students and how those who scored better on EOG tests were also more likely to have better performance on the PACER test. (Cardiovascular endurance run) Students who scored a 1 on the EOG test were around 50% likely to have met the Cardiovascular proficiency in the PACER test while students who scored a 5 on the EOG were around 80%!! As you can see, when you look at students who have higher EOG scores, there is also a better chance that those students are ALSO proficient in the cardiovascular test. (PACER) An active body helps create an active mind!
